The Labour Party has criticised David Cameron’s announcement to create 30,000 starter homes.

On Monday, the Prime Minister announced a £1.2bn fund to build the homes on underused brownfield land over the next five years.

However, John Healey, MP, Labour’s Shadow Cabinet Minister for Housing and Planning, said the statement promised no new starter homes beyond those already announced.

“David Cameron is laying on the rhetoric to hide his failure on new homes,” said John.

"With home-ownership down to the lowest level in a generation and fewer homes built over the last five years than under any peacetime government since the 1920s, David Cameron needs to do much more to fix his five years of failure on housing.”

Rico Wojtulewicz, Policy Adviser at the House Builders Association, said the Prime Minister’s announcement was a step in the right direction but not the leading solution to providing more homes.

“The solution to this crisis may rest on whether the government believes output and house prices are tied to a fairer planning system and improved access for SMEs,” said Rico.

“The fact remains that output and affordability was not at crisis point when SMEs built the majority of homes.

“Now providing only 30% of the market, it is not SMEs posting record profits and joining the FTSE-100 while homes become less affordable on a weekly basis.”
