AFC Wimbledon calls on fans to help win planning battle

The CEO of AFC Wimbledon has appealed to fans to write to the two leading candidates in the London mayoral election asking them to support plans for a new stadium.

Last month, the club was left puzzled when out-going Mayor Boris Johnson called in a planning application for a mixed-use development led by a 20,000-seat stadium and 602 mixed-tenure apartments.

Now Erik Samuelson, CEO, is urging fans to send emails to Sadiq Khan and Zac Goldsmith, simply saying: “Please support AFC Wimbledon’s plans for a new stadium in Plough Lane.”
“Forecasting the outcome of an election is a risky business, of course, but it seems almost certain that the current mayor will be succeeded by one of the two front-runners in the election campaign – Sadiq Khan, the Labour candidate, or Zac Goldsmith for the Conservatives,” said Erik.
“Mr Johnson will almost certainly play no further role in the decision; it will be taken by his successor.”
The election takes place on 5th May and the club is confident that the stadium will be completed by the start of the 2018-19 season.
“Whilst we are fully confident that our planning application will eventually get the go-ahead, it is vital that the new mayor also understands that the stadium plans are very popular with the public,” concluded Erik.
