Council to demolish garages to create new homes

Work has started on a development that will see old garages demolished to make way for six new council houses.

The site on Rowditch Lane, Battersea, will be turned into five three-bedroom and one two-bedroom homes and will be used to rehouse people as part of the regeneration of the nearby Winstanley and York Road estates.

For more than a decade, Wandsworth Borough Council has built over 250 new homes in under-used spaces and intends to build hundreds more across 23 sites.

“Wandsworth Council has been creating new homes for years by making better use of spaces like old garages, boiler rooms or undercrofts,” said Cllr Clare Salier, cabinet member for housing at Wandsworth Council.

Due to there being no land purchase charges, the council’s strategy offers good value for money and has been adopted in other boroughs such as Hackney.

"This not only makes more efficient use of council land, but in this case, supports a major regeneration scheme to provide more than 2,000 new homes in the area, including hundreds for sale, shared ownership and more than 100 additional council homes,” added Cllr Salier.

The new homes on Rowditch Lane are expected to be completed in the summer of 2018.

The regeneration of the Winstanley and York Road estates will provide the borough with over 2,000 new homes.

The council is working with Taylor Wimpey over the next 10 years during the regeneration, which will also see the development of new community facilities, a leisure centre, park and library.
