New clean energy projects to power 3.6 million homes

The government has announced that its clean energy projects are set to generate 3GW of electricity, enough to power 3.6 million homes.

The government’s competitive contract auction for renewable technologies has resulted in 11 new energy projects worth up to £176m per year.

The capacity provided as a result of the auction will cost up to £528m per year less than it would have done in the absence of competition.

Richard Harrington, minister for energy and industry, said: We’ve placed clean growth at the heart of the industrial strategy to unlock opportunities across the country, while cutting carbon emissions.”

The offshore wind sector will invest £17.5bn in the UK up to 2021 and the cost of new offshore wind projects that will generate electricity from 2022/23 are now 50% lower than the first auction in 2015.

The UK has the largest offshore wind capacity in the world and low carbon businesses have a total turnover of £43bn and employ 234,000 people.

Mr Harrington added: “This government will continue to seize these opportunities as the world moves towards a low carbon future, and will set out ambitious proposals in the upcoming Clean Growth Plan.”

The Clean Growth Plan will set out in the government’s industrial strategy, which aims to invest in clean technology and drive economic growth.
