Wakefield Council announces plans for thousands of new homes

Wakefield Council has announced plans to deliver up to 4,500 homes across 230 hectares of former industrial brownfield land in north-east Castleford.

The plans – which are part of the new Castleford masterplan – reveal how the council aims to transform former industrial sites and revitalise the town centre.

Up to £42.5m of public funding could drive forward the development.

Wakefield Council has submitted a bid for £17.5m of funding as part of the Homes England Housing Infrastructure Funding to help accelerate housebuilding.

The council will also submit a funding bid to West Yorkshire Combined Authority for £25m to be used for the Castleford growth corridor road improvement scheme, which aims to tackle congestion in the area.

The 4,500 new homes are expected to be delivered over the next 15 to 20 years.

“The Castleford masterplan supports our big ambitions to [regenerate] the town and to plan for the future,” said Cllr Denise Jeffery, cabinet member for economic growth and regeneration at Wakefield Council.

“This will provide homes for families in the district, help to boost our local economy and [create] various jobs for people in the area.”
