Funding secured for 600 new homes in Leeds

Leeds City Council has secured funding to support the development of 600 new homes following government approval for two residential schemes.

More than £7m from the government’s housing infrastructure fund has been confirmed to enable the development of new housing to the east of Otley and at Roundhay Road in Chapeltown.

The two schemes are expected to deliver 614 new homes combined, with 200 available for affordable housing.

The bid for the funding was made by Leeds City Council working with the developers for each site.

The Roundhay Road development will be delivered by a partnership between Unity Housing Association and Chapeltown Co-housing (ChaCo).

It will benefit from a £990,000 grant to remediate the site and support the development of affordable apartments for the over-55s.

The Otley scheme will see Persimmon Homes work with other landowners to deliver the infrastructure proposals for the site, which has been allocated for the construction of 550 new homes, a new primary school, employment uses and green space.

Funding of £6.3m will enable the development of the 1.5km east of Otley Relief Road, subject to planning, which will allow the development to commence by providing an eastern bypass to relieve traffic pressure on Otley town centre.

“These projects are different in many ways, but demonstrate the breadth of our approach to delivering planned housing growth, while recognising the diversity of needs and aspirations across the whole district,” said councillor Richard Lewis, executive member for regeneration, transport and planning at Leeds City Council.

“We look forward to working with the government on finalising the details of these schemes in the months to come in keeping with our commitment to provide and support new housing and growth at sustainable levels and in the right way for all communities in the city to benefit from.”
