Jo Johnson, the Universities and Science Minister, has announced a new tie-up which will bring analysts, businesses and local authorities together to create 21st century cities.

The Urban Living Partnership aims to integrate research and innovation to address the challenges faced by urban areas and help create visions for the future.

The first stage of the programme will see an investment of £2m to create five pilot city projects and will be the first time that Innovate UK, the UK’s innovation agency, and all seven UK research councils have joined forces.

Jo Johnson said:” As a One Nation Government, we are backing our great cities and towns, ensuring they drive economic growth, embrace innovation and have resilient infrastructure.

“This unique partnership will harness the UK’s world leading strength in research and I encourage all aspirational cities to make their case.”

Dr Mike Pitts, Co-chair of the project, said: “Significant previous investment by the research councils and Innovate UK has built great strength across a broad range of research areas related to urban living.

“This partnership will combine that strength with dynamic local authorities, innovative businesses and major service providers to create the sustainable, successful and desirable city living that we all want for ourselves and future generations.”
