New Build home

Two-thirds favour new-build homes

Two-thirds of people favour new-build properties, according to recent research.

In a survey conducted by Skipton Building Society, two out of three respondents said that they loved the idea of moving into a property that is considered to be a new build, while 38% would buy a new-build home if money was no object.

Over half of the 2,000 adults surveyed believed that the biggest attraction of a new property was the ability to personalise and decorate it before moving in.

Meanwhile, 21% revealed that knowing someone had died inside a property would deter them from buying it.

Some 45% would also immediately disregard any properties over 46 years old.

Rebecca Willey, corporate communications manager at Skipton Building Society, said: “It seems it’s not just the unexpected costs associated with buying an older home that is scaring the nation; a fear of ghosts, mysterious property past and even dead pets buried in the garden are enough to put people off … buying an older house.

“While it may spook some, purchasing an older property full of historical charm is a real treat for others.

“However, it’s not hard to see why so many people want a new-build home, as they provide an opportunity to create the home of your dreams, without the hard work and baggage from previous owners.”
