Property industry urged to adopt new technologies

The wider property industry must adopt new technologies to help create smarter, more liveable towns and cities, the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) has claimed.

A spokesperson from the professional body said that despite huge investments and advancements in technology, the property sector was still slow to uptake the innovations that would boost development.

The RICS suggested more property and construction firms could be using 3D modelling and virtual reality to better visualise, design and deliver a built project.

Rob Higginson, commercial Leader at Laing O’Rourke and chair of the RICS QS and Construction Professional Group, said: “It’s hard to believe that the government requirement for all publicly-funded construction projects to adopt BIM (Building Information Modelling) Level 2 came into effect two years ago – yet there is still no private sector mandate.

“BIM offers enormous value by underpinning everything contractors do throughout all stages of construction.

“For example, clinicians, staff and patients at Clatterbridge Cancer Centre in Liverpool have reviewed each phase of the building’s construction in a 3D-printed model.

“It really empowered them to engage meaningfully and make a significant contribution to the delivery of the project.

“The whole of the industry – including clients and contractors – must make it their mission to feed the momentum that will drive construction forward.

“We all have our part to play.”
