Developer submits plans for £24m student accommodation scheme

Crosslane Student Developments has submitted a planning application for a Swansea-based student accommodation development with a GDV of around £24m.

The six-storey scheme – which rises to 11 storeys in one corner of the property – will provide 311 beds for students once completed, which is expected to be in time for the 2019/20 academic year.

Crosslane hopes to turn the current site – which at present is a car park and restaurant – into a purpose-built scheme comprising 28 self-contained units and 283 en suite cluster flats of between five and nine bedrooms.

“Crosslane is pleased to have submitted its planning application for a new student accommodation development on the Kingsway, Swansea,” said Lisa Timberlake, development manager at Crosslane Student Developments.

“The proposed city-centre scheme is close to the main shopping area and the city’s mainline train station, within very easy reach of both the University of Wales Trinity Saint David and the University of Swansea.”

Crosslane hopes to capitalise on the 21,000 students currently studying at the universities.

Prime Student Living, the student accommodation lettings and operational management arm of Crosslane, has been made responsible for achieving full occupancy prior to practical completion.

“At 311 beds, the scheme will have a significant impact in easing the supply/demand fundamentals for purpose-built student accommodation in the city, as the city’s two universities continue to invest heavily in their expansion,” Lisa added.
