£45m worth of road improvements to unlock nearly 10,000 homes

The government has announced road improvement schemes worth £45.5m which will help unlock the development of more than 6,000 jobs and nearly 10,000 homes in Leicestershire and the South East.

Highways England will make a £19.9m contribution towards the schemes using funds from its Growth and Housing Fund, with the rest coming from private sector developer contributions and other public funding.

This will mark the first time that the Hampshire area has been assisted by the Highways England designated fund.

The £100m Growth and Housing Fund was set up as part of the government’s £15bn investment in roads and provides financial contributions towards the cost of road improvements needed for new developments that promise timely delivery of homes and jobs.

“England’s strategic roads are vital for economic success, connecting businesses, people and supporting the government’s agenda of employment and growth,” said Jim O’Sullivan, chief executive at Highways England (pictured above).

“All of these improvements and future upcoming announcements will ultimately ensure England’s major roads continue to make a valuable contribution to the prosperity of our country.”

The three schemes that have been announced are:

  • M27 junction 9 Whitley Way, up to 3,500 homes and up to 250 jobs near – costing £9.9m from the Growth and Housing Fund and a further £3m from Highways England.
  • Anstey Lane near (A46/A560), up to 2,378 homes and around 260 jobs, with £5m from the Growth and Housing Fund and a further £2.8m from private developers
  • M1 junction 23, up to 4,000 homes and 5,600 jobs, with £5m from the Growth and Housing fund, £10m from private funding and £3.2m from local growth fund.
