Outpost completes sustainable straw room self-build

London-based architecture and design studio Outpost has completed a straw room self-build project which incorporates natural building materials.

The studio — which is dedicated to developing sustainable modern architecture — used solely load-bearing straw bales for the walls of the room and added lime render to both the inside and outside surfaces.

All materials used in the project have low-embodied energy and the straw-bale construction allows for a carbon-negative building.

Outpost described the project as an “amazing testbed for developing ideas” and managed to collaborate with several firms in the process.

The studio is now exploring an affordable housing scheme comprising 40 units and intends to develop these ideas further.
