Sir Robert McAlpine tops the November contractor league table

Sir Robert McAlpine was last month’s top contractor with five contract awards totalling £561m, according to the latest research.

The contractor league table for November published by industry analyst Barbour ABI revealed that almost half of this sum came from a mixed development at Gateshead Quays, which accounted for £250m.

Galliford Try Construction topped the 12-month rolling table with 87 projects and a total contract award value of £1.8bn.

The overall value of all projects awarded to the top 50 contractors was down by 39.6% to £2.7bn in November (October 2019: £4.5bn).

The total quantity of projects also decreased by 20.3% between October and November.

Tom Hall, chief economist at Barbour ABI & AMA Research, said: “November was a particularly quiet month for high-value contract awards among the top 50 contractors.

“A significant drop in value from October suggests a cautious approach towards awarding big-ticket projects during an uncertain period.”
