Linden Homes joins forces with BHPS for hedgehog protection campaign

Linden Homes has partnered with the British Hedgehog Preservation Society (BHPS) for a campaign to protect hedgehogs and other creatures under threat.

As part of the initiative, the national housebuilder will install a hedgehog highway at its existing Waterford Place development in New Eltham, London, and all future sites wherever possible.

At the four-bedroom house scheme, the hedgehog highways will help animals roam freely at night between gardens.

Literature will be provided for all house buyers at Waterford Place, which will inform them about the best way to help hedgehogs move freely.

Linden Homes has also donated £5,000 to the BHSP and teamed up with national project Hedgehog Street to further support their work.

Ginny James, sales and marketing director at Linden Homes South East, said the housebuilder was proud to take the lead in the housebuilding industry.

“The simple measure of holes created at ground level in fencing and other barriers, is one of many, spearheaded by our new sustainability steering group.

“It will help to protect hedgehogs, safely allow them to find enough food, shelter and mates, and allow access between selected gardens in the development and wilder areas.”

Fay Vass, chief executive at BHPS, added: “We are delighted that Linden Homes is making this important pledge to help our dwindling population of hedgehogs.

“Creating holes for hedgehogs in fences and walls is a simple step, but it could have a huge impact on the amount of habitat available for hedgehogs following the development of a site.

“There are many small actions we can all take to help hedgehogs in our gardens and green spaces and, joined together, those small actions can make a huge difference to a species under threat."
