Building safety and fire minister resigns

The building safety and fire minister, Lord Stephen Greenhalgh, has announced his resignation.

The Lord was appointed to the role at the Department for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities and the Home Office on 19th September 2021.

During his tenure as building safety and fire minister, he contributed to the development of the Building Safety Act, which contains provisions intended to improve the standard of buildings and secure the safety of people.

“I have worked hard to ensure that a tragedy like Grenfell never happens again, and the Building Safety Act is the landmark legislation that delivers on that mission,” said the Lord, in his resignation letter to Boris Johnson, published on Twitter on 8th July.

“I am saddened at the turn of events that has resulted in your [Johnson’s] decision to stand down as prime minister.

“Now that the die has been cast, I have decided that this is the right time for me to resign.”

He added that it had been a privilege to serve as a minister, and that he would continue to help the government from the back benches.
