'I am optimistic that the future holds boundless opportunities for women in the property finance sector'

As a woman who has spent more than two decades navigating the very male-dominated world of property finance, I have become extremely passionate about diversity and the representation of women in the sector.

My career has been one of resilience, determination, and a relentless pursuit of empowerment for women in the workplace.

In an ideal world, we would not need to be having this conversation.

Workplace empowerment for women would be a given and we would see equality in pay, representation in leadership positions, and a supportive environment that acknowledges the unique challenges that women face — whether that is balancing career aspirations with motherhood, dealing with the complexities of menopause, as well as mental health and burn out which is an increasing concern.

Unfortunately, achieving this ideal is still a work in progress.

Experience as a woman in property finance

It is no secret that this industry can often resemble an exclusive ‘boys' club, which can make being the only woman in the room feel isolating and slightly intimidating.

However, I have come to understand that strength lies in embracing our differences.

In fact, I sometimes think of it as an advantage as standing out from the crowd makes me easier to remember.

My role as an originator is a demanding one that requires a great deal of adaptability.

With networking and socialising being such key components of the job I am typically out of the house at least two to three evenings a week.

This would be extremely difficult to facilitate for women with childcare responsibilities — for the very few women that do somehow make it work, I have immense respect.

Creating change

Where I can, I do my best to use my experience to provide mentorship to young women entering the space and feel this guidance is crucial to many navigating their professional journey.

It can be quite a difficult industry to break into — and even harder to survive in — so it is important we give these women as much support as we can. It is all about instilling confidence and creating a supportive network where women can thrive.

But it should not stop there. The support given to young women starting out in their careers needs to be carried throughout their entire working life, all the way from new joiner to leader.

Part of the reason there is such a gender imbalance in the industry is because so many young women drop out of it, but hopefully if we stick together and support each other that will change.

There are several ways all of us can do this, from challenging gender biases and stereotypes in the workplace through education and awareness campaigns, to recognising and celebrating the achievements and contributions of female leaders, highlighting their success as role models for future generations.

Driving this change at CapitalRise

At CapitalRise, I have made it my mission to support charitable causes as well as to spearhead initiatives that promote inclusivity and empower women to excel in their careers.

I often ask myself why women always must adapt to a man’s world and what has historically been expected. Take networking events as a prime example.

There is no denying in the past they have been geared towards typically male interests, for example attending certain sporting events.

At CapitalRise, I am organising a programme of events for women, including yoga and wellness sessions, that give female professionals in the space the opportunity to network and build those support and mentoring groups in more accommodating settings.

Change doesn't happen overnight but, with determination and collective effort, we can create a workplace where women feel valued, respected, and empowered to reach their full potential.

As we continue to challenge outdated norms and champion diversity, I am optimistic that the future holds boundless opportunities for women in the property finance sector.
