In March, London Mayor Sadiq Khan was directed to partially review parts of the plan which sets out strategy as to how the city will develop and grow.
Deputy prime minister Angela Rayner has now withdrawn this and written to Sadiq, claiming a “new partnership approach” needs to be adopted to tackle London’s housing shortage.
“I know Mayor Sadiq Khan shares my commitment to tackle the housing crisis and boost economic growth to deliver real opportunities for Londoners,” said Rayner.

“Our new approach will take more fundamental action and focus on a partnership approach to build the housing that London needs and unlock the city’s economic potential.”
Under proposed changes to the National Planning Policy Framework - with the government targeting delivery of 1.5 million homes - around 8,000 homes need to be built a year in the capital.
In the press announcement, the government and mayor’s office stated both parties are “committed to work together to take all possible steps” to deliver the required homes.
