Greenlight secured for £4.23bn of Scottish applications

Detailed planning approvals worth £4.23bn were granted in Scotland for the three months to July, up 41% from the previous three months.

According to Glenigan, this surge in approvals is 54% higher than the same point in 2023.

Within this activity there has been an upturn in approvals for major projects, which are those worth over £100m.

In the three months to July, £2.35bn of projects were greenlit in Scotland which is more than double the amount approved in 2023. This included the approval of the £700m University Monklands Hospital and £400m HMP Glasgow.

For projects smaller than these, approvals increased by 10% from the previous three months and 5% from the same point in 2023.

Approvals within the hotel and leisure sector were particularly strong. Approved projects in this sector rose more than three times to £367m between May and July.

Increases in approval activity were also seen in the healthcare and office space sectors, with the latter recording planning approvals of £907m in the three months to July.
