Aviva Investors enters Octopus Energy 'zero bills' partnership

Asset manager Aviva Investors, along with Packaged Living, has partnered with Octopus Energy to offer the latter’s ‘zero bills’ tariff to its portfolio.

Octopus Energy launched the tariff in 2022 which enables customers living in homes benefitting from heat pumps, battery storage and solar panels to benefit from zero energy bills for five years.

The partnership will see this tariff offered to 48 qualifying homes currently being developed by Aviva Investors and Packaged Living.

These sites, both BTR developments, are Shenley Wood and Whitehouse Park in Milton Keynes. The first plots are expected to be handed over to families later this year.

Aviva Investors are stipulated under the deal to ensure all new homes are fully electric and use air-source heat pumps instead of gas boilers, whilst targeting an EPC ‘A’ rating. PV panels and EV charging points will also be incorporated.

“We have been clear in our desire to support the supply of new homes across the UK, which go beyond minimum standards and can actively improve energy efficiency, creating communities that are ready for the future,” said Julian Cobourne, head of regional investment management at Aviva Investors.

“We hope this encourages more developers to adopt a similar approach to future-proofing UK housebuilding, minimising ongoing energy needs and costs for families, and supporting communities through the energy transition.”

Nigel Banks, zero bills homes director at Octopus Energy, added: “Our partnership with Aviva Investors and Packaged Living is another exciting leap towards creating truly sustainable living.

“By eliminating energy bills, we’re helping renters reduce their impact on the planet while keeping living costs down. This is what the future of renting should look like – affordable, eco-friendly, and hassle-free.”

Shenley Wood will comprise 117 single-family homes consisting of two, three and four-bedroom properties as well as one and two-bedroom apartments.

Meanwhile Whitehouse Park will comprise of 95 single family homes, consisting of two, three and four bedrooms.

The latter is part of the Whitehouse Park masterplan which is aiming to deliver 4,400 new homes to the area.
