Helical secures permission for JV PBSA scheme

Helical and Places for London have secured planning permission for a PBSA and affordable housing scheme the joint venture (JV) is developing.

Constructed above Southwark tube station, the scheme will comprise a 15-storey building with 429 student accommodation units and a nine-storey building with 44 affordable homes.

Designed by architects AHMM, the scheme will be designed to target a 4.5 Home Quality Mark for its affordable housing units and BREEAM ‘Outstanding’ certification for the PBSA.

New retail and community spaces will be included as well as a shared community garden.

Construction will commence in 2026, with completion targeted for 2028.

"This planning approval is a further positive step forward in our JV with Places for London,” said Matthew Bonning-Snook, CEO at Helical. “Whilst the site benefitted from planning permission for a 220,000 sq ft office scheme, we have brought forward a more valuable proposition.

“This important site will deliver much in demand purpose built student accommodation and affordable housing, along with high quality public realm and significant benefits to the local community."
