MHCLG assumes fire safety responsibilities

The Ministry for Housing, Communities and Local Government (MHCLG) has assumed responsibility for all fire safety regulations, following recommendations from the latest Grenfell Tower inquiry.

These functions will be transferred from the Home Office with the aim of improving “clarity and accountability.”

Alex Norris, the minister for building safety and local growth who will be taking on responsibility for fire functions, described the transfer as a “significant step”.

“Ensuring the safety of people in their homes and communities is a top priority for this government,” added Norris.

“By bringing all fire and building safety responsibilities under one department, we are reinforcing accountability, improving coordination, and taking decisive action to protect lives.”
