Construction ranks as second most dangerous sector



Construction has been ranked as the second most dangerous sector, based on Health and Safety Executive (HSE) data on worker injuries.


HSE data shows that around one in 42 construction workers are hurt each year.

Analysing 2023/24 data, there were an average 47,000 estimated injury incidents during this time in the sector with 2,390 per 100,000 workers.

In terms of injuries per workers, this saw construction only come behind accommodation and food service activities which had 2,820 injuries per 100,000 workers.

Human health and social work activities, as an industry, had the highest estimated injury incidents at 79,000.

The data was analysed by money.co.uk which found there to be an average of 28,000 workplace-related illnesses per year in construction.

This contributed to a fatality rate of 1.65 deaths per 100,000 construction workers each year.
