MHCLG targets neglected high streets with 'Pride in Place' push

The Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government (MHCLG) has announced a new campaign to encourage investment in neglected high streets.

The ‘Pride in Place’ programme will give local authorities new powers to seize boarded up shops and revitalise them, with the benefit of record funding from the government.

Development Finance Today has contacted the MHCLG to determine what it means by “record funding”, which was not specified within the initial announcement.

The programme is initially targeting 330 communities.

Alongside compulsory purchase powers, councils will be empowered to black applications from betting shops, vape stores and fake barbers.

““When people step out of their front doors, they know their communities are struggling. They see shuttered pubs, fading high streets and their local areas in decline,” said Steve Reed, secretary of state for housing, communities and local government.

“Yes, communities have been stretched — but they haven’t given up.

“They’re working hard to make things better, and we’re backing them.”
