FMB urges industry to support disabled builders

The Federation of Master Builders (FMB) is urging the construction industry to create more inclusive workspaces for disabled builders.

To mark World Disability Day, the organisation has highlighted FMB Scotland member Martin Sneddon who has worked in construction since starting his bricklaying apprenticeship five decades ago.

Having lost his hearing over a decade ago, Martin has had to develop numerous practical applications to continue working safely and effectively.

These learnings are now being put forward wider to benefit other disabled builders like Martin.

The recommendations include making efforts to inform workers that disabled colleagues are onsite, following the model of successful mental health campaigns that have raised awareness, creating open communication channels to discuss adjustments when needed and overall recognising that even small changes can make big differences.

“With numbers falling in recruitment, I'd say to anyone with a disability, hidden or otherwise, to come and have a go,” said Martin.

“You will meet with support everywhere you go — people with hearing loss like me can do it, others can too."

Brian Berry, CEO at the FMB, added: "With the current skills shortage there is a duty on us all to make the construction industry more inclusive.

“I want to highlight members like Martin who demonstrate that talent, skill, and dedication know no boundaries.

“Well done again to Martin for all your success at the Master Builder Awards this year!"
