FMB welcomes faster planning, renews licensing calls

The Federation of Master Builders (FMB) has welcomed planned reforms to accelerate planning decisions but argues licensing for builders is still required.

Planning reform has been a focus of the Labour government as it seeks to unlock housing delivery and help build 1.5 million homes over the course of the current parliament.

While the FMB has welcomed policymakers’ focus on speed, and the financial benefits it will potentially deliver construction companies, the trade body has argued this alone will not combat rogue builders.

Brian Berry, CEO at the FMB, has said it’s “vital” to combat unnecessary costs and delays but the quality of the underlying work cannot be overlooked.

“Currently, anyone can call themselves a builder, even when planning is involved, and homeowners have no way of knowing who to trust,” said Brian.

“We want the government to match this planning ambition with equal urgency and introduce a Licence to Build."
