Tories and Reform urged to prioritise London regeneration

Tories and Reform have been urged to prioritise regeneration to solve London’s housing crisis, according to two centre-right think tanks.

“Fixing London Housing” is co-authored by two centre-right think tanks, Onward and The Centre for Policy Studies. The latter was co-founded by Margaret Thatcher in 1974.

The report is published with forewords from James Cleverly, Conservative shadow housing secretary, and Laila Cunningham, Reform’s mayoral candidate for London.

The approach outlined in the report puts an emphasis on regeneration, arguing this could deliver 500,000 additional homes by doubling the density of London’s post-war estates.

It has also calculated that 2,293 hectares of strategic industrial land located near major transport links could be released.

As well as targeted brownfield land, the report is arguing for two new development corporations to be created to cover the Southern Tower Hamlets and the Old Kent Road Bakerloo line extension corridor, while giving more powers to the existing Old Oak and Park Royal Development Corporation.

“It is a question of the political will to use the powers already held by the mayor and secretary of state,” read the report.

“To not do so is a political choice, and a misguided one: building in central London makes absolute sense for the centre-right.”
