The UK Green Building Council has responded to the publication of the Lyons Housing Review which supports the concept of a zero carbon standard for all new build homes.

The Review calls for a Government in 2015 to reaffirm its commitment to a “genuine zero carbon standard” for new homes and set out a “clear trajectory” for all homes to achieve this if further action is required beyond 2016.

It also recommends reversing the exemption for small housing developments from the Allowable Solutions element of the zero carbon standard, which was announced by the Coalition Government in the Queen’s Speech in June this year.

John Alker, Director of Policy and Communications at the UK Green Building Council, said: “The Lyons Review demonstrates that there needn’t be a trade-off between the quality and quantity of new homes.

“Its strong support for a ‘genuine zero carbon’ standard and reversal of the exemption for small sites is hugely welcome. Zero carbon homes are not only better for the environment, but reduce energy bills for householders and contribute to our energy security.”
