Following a recent burglary at a property under renovation Police are urging builders to ensure that new build and restoration properties are left properly secure.

Between 8am on Sunday, December 14 and 8.40am on Monday, December 15, offenders smashed a glass panel on the rear door of a property to gain entry.

Two saws were stolen from inside the house on Heanor Road in Smalley, Ilkeston, which is currently undergoing renovation.

Community Safety Inspector Russ Dakin said: “I would like to take this opportunity to encourage residents and builders to ensure that new build and properties under restoration are left properly secure.

“We have had a number of incidents on such buildings where tools and building materials, such as copper piping and units, are being stolen by thieves.

“It is important to ensure that buildings have good quality locks to help prevent offenders from accessing a property and consider fitting an alarm system.

“If a property is vacant, consider leaving on a light overnight to deter thieves, ask neighbours to keep a look out on your property and make sure that valuable tools aren’t left in view of passers-by.”

Residents are being actively encouraged to report suspicious activity to police on 101 or 999 in an emergency.

Anyone with any information about the incident is asked to contact police on 101 quoting crime number 53092/14 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
