A time capsule that remained submerged for more than 100 years was unexpectedly discovered in the middle of redevelopment works at the former Queen Elizabeth Hospital.

Rydon and Family Mosaic are redeveloping the former hospital to create 188 residential properties. Original materials from the initial property are being conserved and reused, including 30,000 bricks.

Contents of the capsule included a newspapers from 1902, a hymn sheet, a ribbon used within the building’s grand opening ceremony performed by Her Royal Highness Princess Henry of Battenberg - the fifth daughter of Queen Victoria.

Around 38 per cent of the development’s new units will be affordable, for rent or for sale via shared ownership.

The remainder of properties can be accessed through Mettle and Poise.

A new capsule is set to be buried at the development.
