Music fans have rushed to block planning proposals to turn a famed recording studio into 25 properties.
Plans to turn Liverpool’s Princes Studios, home to more than 250 musicians and 50 bands, into 25 properties have been slammed by music lovers.
Fans have now launched an online petition to save the recording studios which has already attracted over 2700 signatures.
A spokesman for the studios confirmed that the petition was in place and that planning permission had been granted to a property development firm.
The spokesman said: “We spoke to a council case manager on Monday and they said that they were in favour of redevelopment no matter what.”
“Everything is up in the air at the moment, but there is a planning application in place with a property firm.
“The council are looking to build 25 properties and are trying to develop a lot of buildings in central Liverpool.
“It’s heart-breaking for the bands. These are all ambitious and talented people and they will need to find somewhere else.”
The petition states that the closure would have a huge impact on the city’s music scene and that any redevelopment would make it even harder for musicians to find recording space in what is already an incredibly tough market.
Describing it as one of Liverpool’s music scene’s “most valuable assets”, the petition calls for music fans to sign the petition and spread word of the campaign in an attempt to rebuff planning permission granted to developers.
Protesters cite Liverpool’s history of creativity and “artistic output” as a reason for standing up to the proposals to redevelop the studios.
Another protestor complained that many studios have already been closed.
One campaigner, Paul McKeown said: “I'm from Liverpool and used to be in and around many bands and Elevator was always a central hub for bands & creativity.
“I'm shocked now when I come back to Liverpool and see how many venues etc have been closed down, and even more by how many buildings have been redeveloped into soulless student accommodation.
“Liverpool City council needs to stop this mindless redevelopment across the city.”
The petition has now reached more than 50 per cent of its target with 2758 signatures of a targeted 5000.
