A survey carried out by the Federation of Master Builders has revealed that SME firms are experiencing a growth in workloads.

However, with the reported rise in workloads, the survey revealed that respondents were experiencing a difficulty in recruiting in selected skills areas.

The State of Trade Survey shows that in Q1 2015 more firms, 39 per cent compared to 35 per cent the previous quarter, have reported having higher workloads.

It also revealed that recruiting bricklayers, carpenters and joiners were proving to be a problem for those who took part in the survey.

Respondents predicted that over the next three months there will be a rise in activity as 45 per cent of firms are projecting higher workloads, as opposed to 29 per cent,  while 15 per cent are anticipating lower workloads, 24 per cent down on the previous quarter.

The survey showed that employment has increased for the fifth quarter running as the proportion of firms reporting a growth in workforce has risen from 23 per cent to 26 per cent.

The figures also reveal that Northern Ireland has experienced the biggest jump in activity, growing 17 per cent.

The next six months though is expected to see output prices such as wages and material costs rise, but respondents did say their net balance for material costs did fall.
