BBC Cymru Wales has announced it will relocate its Llandaff headquarters to Central Square as part of the regeneration of the area north of Cardiff Central station.
The new building will be the first office development in Wales designed by architects Sir Norman Foster and Partners and will act as the centre piece of the development.
The redevelopment is a key priority for Cardiff City Council and leader, Phil Bale, said these were very exciting times for the city and the development would leave a lasting impression on visitors.
“This type of investment comes around once in a generation and to secure it in Central Square is a major statement of confidence in our plans. It also boosts Cardiff’s emergence as a leading centre for creative industries in Europe,” said Phil.
“A Foster & Partners building housing one of the UK’s best known brands will help to transform Central Square and will attract further investment around it.
“The new gateway will show Cardiff in its true light, a modern fast growing vibrant capital city which has so much to offer for business and those who choose to live here.
“I’m really glad the BBC has recognised the potential of the area and has taken a decision that I think will prove to be the best for their long term future and the best for Cardiff.”
Chief Executive of Rightacres Property, who will take a hold of the project, Paul McCarthy, said he was thrilled Central Square had been chosen as the new Broadcasting House and labelled the decision as one of the most important relocations for many years.
“In choosing Central Square as its preferred location, BBC Cymru Wales have shown great faith in the vision for the Central Square project and we are delighted that the scale of the opportunity has been recognised by the BBC,” said Paul.
“The impact that the new Broadcasting House will have on the regeneration of Central Square, the most important gateway into the Capital and Wales and the future positioning of the City will be huge, and we look forward to working closely with the City of Cardiff Council and the BBC to ensure that this vision becomes a reality.”
"This is an opportunity for all of us to create something of international significance that will deliver economic benefits for Cardiff and continue the momentum of establishing the city as one of the most important media centres in the UK.”
