The Queen will announce new measures in her speech tomorrow which will give over a million people the chance to own their own home.

Greg Clark, Communities Secretary, will confirm that the first Queen’s Speech, to be aired tomorrow, will include a “ground-breaking” Housing Bill which will also release brownfield land to builders.

The ‘Right to Build’ change in the Housing Bill is set to boost housing supply and diversify the housing sector by allowing people to be allocated land with planning permission so that they can build their own home, either by themselves or by commissioning a local builder.

It was highlighted that self-build delivers a majority of homes in numerous other countries, which will, as a result, boost business and give support to small and medium size builders.

A new register of brownfield land is also set to quicken the pace of the construction of new homes on previously-used sites.

“Our Housing Bill will offer over a million people a helping hand onto the housing ladder. That is what a government for working people is about – making sure people have the security they need to build a brighter future for them and their families,” stated Communities Secretary Greg Clark.

However, Housing Minister Brandon Lewis, who recently welcomed the latest housebuilding figures, has argued that while Help to Buy is helping thousands to buy their first home, more is needed.

“Anyone who works hard and wants to get on the property ladder should have the opportunity to do so, which is why tomorrow’s Queen’s Speech will include measures so a million more people have the chance to do exactly that,” commented Brandon Lewis.

“And with housing starts at their highest since 2007, we’ll take steps that will get workers on sites and keep the country building.”

While more than 200,000 household have been given a helping hand to buy a home in the past five years through government-backed schemes, the government has deemed further action must be taken.

It is believed the new policy will grow house building and reduce social housing waiting lists, with money made from sales invested in more affordable housing.

However, in order to fund this policy, councils will be required to sell their most expensive housing when it becomes vacant, with any leftover funds used in a new Brownfield Regeneration Fund to increase housing supply.

Other changes to be announced in tomorrow’s speech include Right to Buy being extended to 1.3 million housing association tenants.

The government also previously announced plans to extend the Help to Buy equity loan scheme to 2020 in order to help more people buy their own homes.
