A new library in Willesden Green has opened following a ‘21st Century makeover’.
The library, which is part of a community centre that also features a museum and performance spaces, will be official opened on 12th September when the Rugby World Cup trophy tour passes through Brent.
Cllr James Denselow, who is Brent Council’s Cabinet Member for Stronger Communities and the first person to borrow a book from the new library, said: “Libraries today are very much the hubs of our local communities where residents can go to be informed, to educate and be educated, to entertain and be entertained and to socialise.”
“It is fantastic therefore to see this stunning 21st century building open its doors to the public, offering Willesden residents a chance to do all those things through this new library, performance space, museum, archives and soon a café too - right in the heart of the local community.”
The new library has 40,000 books, 140 study spaces, 81 PCs and 14 iPads for members of the public to use.
It replaces an old library built in the 1980s but still contains features of the original.
Brent Council worked with architects AHMM, developers Linden Homes and contractor Galliford Try on the project which has not used any taxpayers’ money.
