Bath City has received messages of support from Eric Cantona and actor Ricky Tomlinson as it attempts to raise £750,000 to secure the immediate future of the club.

The club is running the campaign through community shares platform, Microgenius, and has so far sold  £135,360 worth of shares.

Speaking on the campaign’s website Cantona said: “Great news the fans of Bath City are going to buy the club.”

“I am supporting them by buying a share myself, you must support them too, it’s a great club I have [seen] it for myself and now we can make it even greater.”

The scheme will see a Community Benefit Society own the club which will be run by the fans and the wider community.

As well as using the funds to satisfy creditors, the scheme aims to improve the club’s ground which will be based around a 3G pitch to allow the whole community to use it.

Tomlinson, famous for roles in the Royle Family and Mike Bassett England Manager, also confirmed he will be backing the bid by buying shares and is urging others to follow suite.

“I’m prepared to come down to Bath, bring a couple of my showbiz mates, put a fundraiser on, if you promise me to get out there, get your mates, and your parents and your friends and your siblings to buy shares in the club,” said Tomlinson.

“We want to own that club, we want to make it ours.”

Potential shareholders can contribute anything from £10 upwards to the crowdfunding campaign and to find out more click here.

So a rich footballer and a wealthy actor have deigned to buy a share in a football club! In return Mr Cantona and Mr Tomlinson get free publicity - it is pathetic.
