Rural communities will be allowed to build starter homes for local residents after the government announced the first Rural Productivity Plan…

The scheme will change planning rules and allow starter homes to be built on Rural Exception Sites for the first time.

Sites can now be allocated for homes to be built for people who already live in the area or have connections to it, for example if they work there.

Commenting on the plan, George Osborne, Chancellor of the Exchequer, said: “For too long the British economy has been reliant on businesses based in our cities and towns.”

“We want to create a One Nation economy that taps into the potential of all parts of our country.

“That means setting the right conditions for rural communities and businesses to thrive, investing in education and skills, improving rural infrastructure, and allowing rural villages to thrive and grow.”

The government also announced plans to improve services in rural areas such as broadband availability and transport links.

Commenting on the announcement Lucy Grove, Head of Policy at the National Housing Association, said: “Young people and families are being priced out of rural villages and market towns across the nation by an acute lack of affordable housing and key infrastructure.”

“This is draining our countryside of its vital workforce and hurting rural businesses.

“Today’s announcement is a welcome step in the right direction.

“Homes at prices to suit a range of incomes and personal needs, including starter homes, are needed in communities up and down the country to ease the rural housing crisis.”
