Living on Elm Street really is a nightmare for UK homeowners.

A house on a street which shares the same name as the horror movie can reduce the value of your home by up to 57%.

Online real estate agent HouseSimple.com looked at house prices on Elm Streets across the UK and found that they are, on average, 38.8% lower than on surrounding roads.

Elm Street in Newcastle village Seaton Burn showed the biggest price drop with property prices almost 60%, or £120,000 lower than the average for the postcode.

The smallest price drop was in Stockport, although prices were still £37,410 less than the average.

Alex Gosling, CEO of HouseSimple.com said: “It sounds like a horror movie sequel, but for hundreds of homeowners, the curse of Elm Street is a grim reality.

“Spookily, house prices on all of these Elm Streets were significantly lower than the average house price in the local area.

“We are a superstitious nation, so perhaps lower house prices are the only way to tempt people into braving the supernatural and buying here!”

HouseSimple.com found more than 70 Elm Streets in the UK and took a sample of 20 from different areas.
