The Ministry of Defence (MOD) has announced the release of 12 sites which provide land to build around 15,000 new homes..
The sale of the sites is expected to generate £500m which will be ploughed back into defence and is part of the MOD’s plan to reduce its build estate, which covers 452,000 hectares, by 30%.
As part of that plan, the MOD has committed to generating £1bn through land sales which will contribute to 55,000 new homes.
Defence Minister Mark Lancaster said: “Defence has the strongest incentive to become more efficient; with every pound we make by disposing of excess land reinvested into a defence budget that keeps Britain safe.
“We are also making an important contribution of 55,000 homes to the wider government housing targets.
“Every acre that we can free up will ensure that more people have the opportunity to own their own home.”
The 12 sites which will be sold for housing include:
• Kneller Hall in Twickenham
• Claro and Deverell barracks in Ripon
• RAF sites Molesworth and Alconbury in Cambridgeshire, and Mildenhall in Suffolk.
• Lodge Hill in Kent
• Craigiehall in Edinburgh
• HMS Nelson Wardroom in Portsmouth
• Hullavington Airfield in Wiltshire
• RAF Barnham in Suffolk
• MOD Feltham in London
The MOD will be announcing further sites for sale in due course, and a full list will be published later this year.
