A global popstar has thrown her support behind an arena development in Swansea.

Singer Bonnie Tyler, who made her name with ‘Total Eclipse of the Heart’ and ‘Holding Out for a Hero’, believes a venue in Wales’ second largest city would be a huge boost for the local people and businesses.

Swansea Council has appointed Rivington Land to lead the regeneration of the St David’s development site and it is proposing the construction of a 3,500 seat arena.

Bonnie, who lives in nearby West Cross, said the proposal is a fantastic idea given the number of world class singers Wales has produced.

"The arena being proposed would bring big name performers to Swansea, giving local people convenient access to world class entertainment and putting Swansea on the map as a leading city of events,” said Bonnie.

"Swansea Bay is a great spot for tourists, but the arena could attract even more visitors to the area in future, which would be great news for local businesses like hotels, restaurants and shops."

The council is also looking to include a new tall residential building in the development and is working with Trebor Developments which specialises in apartments and town houses.

Another local composer, musician and composer Mal Pope is also backing the project.

“I remember seeing huge bands like Queen and Slade perform in Swansea,” said Mal.

“The arena being proposed would help further raise Swansea's profile and attract some of the biggest names in pop and rock music."
