Swinton Lions RLFC (Rugby League Football Club) has signed a lease on a 7.3 acre site in Agecroft, with plans to build a new community stadium within the next three years.

The club has partnered Salford City Council to help secure a permanent home for the Lions which will serve as a focal point for sport, community and education in Swinton.

Ian Steward, Mayor of Salford City, said: “The council will support the Lions in the development of a new stadium on the site to secure the long-term future of the club.

“The council views this as a landmark proposal and a fitting way to celebrate the club’s 150th anniversary.

“I am looking forward to working with the club in making it secure and successful.”

In the meantime, Swinton Lions will pay its home games at Sale RUFC’s (Rugby Union Football Club) ground at Heywood Road.

Steve Wild, Chief Executive at Swinton Lions, said: “The construction of this facility will not only have Swinton playing back in Swinton, but it will also place the club at the heart of the community, both in sporting and non-sporting terms.

“It’s an incredibly exciting project, which will help regalvanise the local population behind the club, and consolidate our position in the higher reaches of the sport where we belong.

“We have had a number of meetings with Salford City Council and the mayor in recent months, and they have been extremely supportive of the club. We see the preparation and signing of the lease as a very welcome and clear message of intent.”
