102-year-old market ‘threatened’ by developers

102-year-old market 'threatened' by developers

An association has launched a petition to help save one of London’s longest standing markets.

Shepherd’s Bush Market, which was established in 1914, was sold to redevelopers Orion Land & Leisure in 2014 by Transport for London for the development of a private block of 200-plus luxury flats adjoining the market.

However, in the 12 months that followed, the Shepherd’s Bush Market Tenants’ Association (SBMTA) has claimed that over 10% of the market’s businesses have closed down and said the remaining businesses’ livelihoods were being “threatened”.

The SBMTA has launched a petition via change.org to: “raise awareness to protect and secure this exceptional community of ethnically diverse, independent and unique businesses.

“The redeveloper’s scheme is removing the tenants' security and forcing additional costs and liability onto the market[‘s] businesses.

“It is wrong that the Shepherd's Bush Market[‘s] businesses should be compromised.”

Today, the Court of Appeal will be handing down its judgement on the appeal against the compulsory purchase order on the market area.

The SBMTA said: “The small, long-established businesses of Shepherd’s Bush Market await the result with hope and optimism for their livelihoods, their families and their customers.”
