The Exeter St James Forum is concerned by Exeter City Football Club’s plans for a replacement stand at its St James Park stadium and proposals to build several large blocks for the accommodation of 327 students.
An organisation of residents in Exeter has approached the Department of Communities and Local Government (DCLG) and asked it to intervene in the planning process of a stadium redevelopment.
It is unhappy with the “utilitarian replacement stand” and “the scale and form of the buildings and quality of design”.
The club received planning permission for a new grandstand and buildings from Exeter City Council in early February, but this was met with “overwhelming dismay” from the permanent residents in the area.
On its website, the Exeter St James Forum, stated: “The forum is grateful to our two councillors, Keith Owen and Christine Buswell, who spoke against the application at the meeting. Christine, a member of the planning committee, was one of only two councillors to vote against.
The 8-2 decision has stopped the city council from confirming planning permission until it has been decided if the DCLG will take over responsibility for the decision.
Exeter City Football Club said it expects to hear within around three weeks whether or not this will happen.
