Property owner to demolish home or face jail

A property owner could face prison if he fails to demolish his unauthorised dwelling.

Robert Fidler of Honeycrock Farm, Axes Lane, Redhill, Surrey, was ordered to demolish the building by 6th June after the Secretary of State concluded that the house and associated structures were deemed to be unauthorised.
Recent media reports by the BBC suggest that Mr Fidler was demolishing the dwelling, however Reigate and Banstead Borough Council has responded that they were not aware of this.
“Mr Fidler hasn’t made us aware that he is demolishing his unauthorised dwelling but if this is the case we are pleased that he appears to be complying with the instructions of the court,” said a spokesperson for the council.
“It is in Mr Fidler’s interests to demolish by 6th June as the High Court judge ordered that he will likely a face prison term if he doesn’t.
“We have already given Mr Fidler advice about the options available to him for providing alternative accommodation in existing lawful buildings on his site.”
