Zac Goldsmith pledges to build 50,000 London homes a year

London mayoral candidate Zac Goldsmith has pledged to build 50,000 more homes a year by the end of 2020 if he is elected to the post.

Launching his housing manifesto, the Conservative MP for Richmond Park and North Kingston said he would appoint a chief architect to advise him on forward planning, drive high quality design across major developments and hold developers to account on behalf of local communities.

Zac said: "Housing is the most important issue facing London. I am clear that the only way to fix London’s housing crisis is to build more homes and we can only do that with a mayor that will protect transport investment to open up new land, keep our economy strong and work with the government to release public land for development.

“As mayor, I will not just build more homes but build better homes too, working with my new chief architect and local communities to design a London we will all be proud to call our home.

"At a time when London’s population is set to hit 10 million, we cannot afford a four-year Corbyn-Khan housing experiment that we know will fail."

Zac also pledged to address the lack of housing, claiming that it was either developed for people on council house waiting lists or for those on higher salaries – leaving homeownership out of reach for many.
