Historic pub could be rebuilt brick-by-brick

A public enquiry at Westminster City Hall will decide if a landmark pub which was demolished without approval from the council should be rebuilt “brick-by-brick”.

The Carlton Tavern pub was demolished in April 2015, where it breached planning laws as it was being considered for Grade II listing.

The developers, CLTX Ltd were served an enforcement notice by Westminster City Council which required the rebuilding of the pub to be done “brick-by-brick”.

CLTX Ltd did not comply with the order and appealed to the Planning Inspectorate, leaving the future of the pub to be decided by a public enquiry.

Cllr Robert Davis, Cabinet Member for the Built Environment at Westminster City Council said it stood shoulder-to-shoulder with the residents of Westminster wanting to see the Carlton Tavern rebuilt.

“The strength of feeling from the community is clear and the council has done all it can to support them in seeing this part of the city’s special heritage reinstated.

"Throughout this unfortunate story, I have been committed to doing all I can to see the situation rectified.

“It is my sincere hope that this planning inquiry will help us do that and I look forward to hearing our case being put forward in the strongest possible terms by the council’s officers, as well as by local people themselves."

The enquiry started on 17th May and could last up to eight days.
