Firm completes award-winning redevelopment

JD Architects has announced the completion of an award-winning redevelopment project in Rye, East Sussex, transforming a garage that had lain derelict for 14 years.

Using a wooden façade made from eco-friendly Kebony, JD Architects converted the former garage on Clique Ports Street into a mixed-use residential and retail development.

Jonathan Dunn, lead architect on the project, said: “This was a fascinating project to be involved with as we had to come up with a beautiful design that modernised the site while preserving the medieval town wall.

“Kebony cladding proved to be a fantastic solution, providing a contemporary look which draws on elements of local history and is a great asset for the town of Rye.”

Drawing inspiration from the town’s maritime heritage, the properties incorporate architectural elements from the nearby shipyard warehouse.

The Clique Ports Street development was announced as a winner at the RIBA Regional South East Award 2016.

Archaeological digs and studies were also carried out to avoid disruption to Rye medieval town wall, which runs through the site and is protected as a scheduled ancient monument.

Developed in Norway, Kebony is an environmentally friendly and fast-growing softwood.

The sustainable material is impregnated with furfuryl alcohol to increase durability, stability and develop a dark colouration.

Adrian Pye, International Sales Director at Kebony, added: “The architects at JDA have done a fantastic job, taking a derelict site and transforming it with a beautiful, contemporary design in keeping with the area’s history.

“From the Kebony-clad frontage to the carefully considered window placement, a great amount of time and thought has gone into the design details and we are delighted with the end result.”
