British Land is collaborating with landscaping and architectural practice Snøhetta to design a series of artistic and design-focused public spaces for the local community.
This association is one of four major design partnerships already confirmed by British Land.
Snøhetta is renowned for a number of high-profile international designs, including the Alexandria Library in Egypt, the Norwegian National Opera and Ballet and “the only cultural building” on the World Trade Center Memorial site.
The first of these spaces, located on Kingdom Street, includes pocket parks that will incorporate public art, fire pits and games rooms.
Inspired by the aesthetics of a library, Snøhetta has created a cluster of oversized books.
This space, titled ‘The Library’, is set for launch in 2017
The second space aims to transform the area adjacent to the waterside that is partly covered by the Westway.
The design aims to combine aesthetic beauty with practical benefits.
Chris Grigg, CEO of British Land, said: “Our vision is to create ‘Places People Prefer’ and design forms an integral part of delivering places that make a positive difference to people’s lives.
“We are delighted to be partnering with Snøhetta; at the heart of good design is the challenge to deliver the most impact and best outcome for the user, whether it is an individual product, a single building or the wider environment.”
Robert Greenwood, partner and managing director of Snøhetta, commented: “British Land stands apart as a company that understands the role of private initiative in public projects.
“We are thrilled to be a part of their ongoing commitment to design by creating Places People Prefer.”
