Compulsory purchase powers used for 876-home development

A London borough council has used compulsory purchase powers in order to acquire land earmarked for a significant residential development.

Hounslow Council seized land south of Brentford High Street to facilitate the development of up to 876 new homes.

The news comes less than a month after the new housing minister Gavin Barwell MP announced a new planning bill that would simplify the compulsory purchase process.

Councillor Steve Curran, leader of Hounslow Council, said: “A massive amount of work has been done to progress a high-quality development that will breathe new life into Brentford.

“Most of the land has already been acquired and by using compulsory purchase we are ensuring that the scheme can progress smoothly for the benefit of everyone who lives in and visits Brentford.”

Hounslow Council claimed 950 jobs would be created as a result of the project.

The announcement follows a council meeting during which councillors decided to use compulsory purchase powers to begin a transformation of the high street and Waterside areas of Brentford.

The approach will enable the construction of new retail, leisure and commercial developments, in addition to the high street residential project.

Earlier last month, the council took possession of land for a new Brentford Community Stadium and additional housing developments.
