£275bn of residential property at risk of flooding

The Environment Agency has warned that 1.3 million people living within London and the Thames estuary are at risk of flooding.

The announcement was made following the agency’s five-year review of tidal flood risk indicators in the Thames estuary.

The review found that despite the tidal flood risk increasing, it was still in line with its Thames Estuary 2100 flood risk management plan.

In the review, it found that the number of people and properties at risk from flooding had increased.

Over £275bn of residential property is now at risk, £75bn more than in the original plan, while the figure of 1.3 million people at risk was 50,000 more than previously predicted.

The Thames Estuary 2100 plan sets out how increasing flood risks in the Thames can be managed through to the end of the century.

Howard Davidson, operations director at the Environment Agency, stated that the report was fundamental to help continue to manage the changing flood risks.

“It also shows that the scenarios and models used to create the Thames Estuary 2100 Plan are still valid.

“It gives us and our partners, who have a role in reducing flood risk, confidence to continue the actions set out in the plan; maintaining a high standard of protection for London and estuary communities.”

This review is just the first of many over five-year intervals that will track the indicators of flood risk over the century with the next review taking place in 2020.
