Sadiq Khan criticises runway decision delay

Sadiq Khan has criticised government ministers after they delayed the final decision as to where to build a new airport runway in south-east England.

The decision has been delayed for up to a year and comes after Mr Khan urged Theresa May to dismiss plans for a third runway for Heathrow back in August.

Now the mayor of London has accused the government of “causing unnecessary uncertainty for British businesses already struggling with Brexit”.

Downing Street has postponed the final decision on whether to expand Heathrow or Gatwick until late 2017.

"Now, more than ever, businesses need certainty and stability in order to make investment decisions and to keep jobs in Britain. Instead they are getting dither and delay,” said Mr Khan.

Mr Khan has urged the government to commit to building an extra runway at Gatwick.

“Now it's time to get on with building a new runway at Gatwick, which can be built quicker, cheaper, and without the years of legal and political battles that Heathrow clearly faces."
